5 tools to calm your inconsolable baby
Do you have an inconsolable baby?
If your baby is fed, burped, changed and no amount of cuddles and bouncing will calm them down....you have yourself an overtired and overstimulated baby. Don't worry. This is normal. The good news is "The power to calm your baby is in your hands!"
Sensory Deprivation
If your baby isn't sleeping, despite all their needs being met, it could be a sensory issue. Your baby might be overstimulated. The best way to help them with that is to place them in a dark room. Turn on a white noise machine.
Sometimes this calm, dark room is all they need to settle down. It helps them unwind after a busy day, subtly reminding them of the womb.
Using a Baby Swaddle
Another way to soothe your baby is to swaddle them. For nine months, your baby was snug in the womb. They felt the safety of your uterus, heard the beating of your heart, and could rest knowing all was well.
A tried and true sleep sack like the Swaddelini can be just what they need to settle down. It features Hug Technology around the chest and arms, which gives them that cuddled feeling. However, it is loose around the hips, so no need to worry about them not being able to move.
Infant Massage
If you chose the Swaddelini, you know it is infant massage friendly. You can start by gently rubbing their tummy, or doing a figure eight with their hips. The Massage Me Swaddelini is the perfect guide to massaging your baby when they are ready for sleep.
However, if you want to learn more about infant massage, we recommend Elina Furman's infant massage guide.
Call in Someone Else
You are a worthy caregiver, but sometimes your baby just needs someone else to shake up their routine. Call in dad, or grandma, or a friend to help with your baby. They may have a different way of holding them, or just a little more energy than you.
There is no shame in calling for help, because it takes a village to raise a little one. Your mental health is your baby's mental health, so take care of yourself.
Take Care of Yourself
When you are in the middle of the fray of raising your child, it can be easy to forget your own needs. Taking care of your needs, like showering, eating, and socializing can give you the energy you need to be a better parent.
So let others help, utilize tools like the Swaddelini, and be the best caregiver you can be for your baby.
